I dont know if any of you have updated your monitors of late. I just bought a new one for my old faithfull XP2200 that was my main gaming rig for years. Its still stuck in the spare room and hardly gets used now since I bought my laptop. I recently bought a netbook too so of late the old computer really has just been gathering dust. However since I built the semi decent rig for use in the living room as a media centre I have been thinking that old faithfull needs to finally be retired for good and I have been thinking about building a replacement to perhaps go gaming again. So I was in a computer shop yesterday buying stuff to switch the network at my work to wireless when I spotted a bargain LG 22 inch monitor.

Its native resolution is 1920 x 1080. I have tinkered with that resolution before on the comp I built to hook up to the HDTV but sitting 10 feet away made fonts for browsing and general windows use etc too small so I stuck the TV back to 1360 x 768. However with a monitor your only 2 or 3 feet away so its perfectly usuable. What is really strange though is browsing etc at these resolutions. Even typing this using the new monitor I can type about 30 words in each line before I reach the end of the type box. Its all very weird lol. It will be interesting to go gaming at these resolutions but for now I suspect this rig will never cut it for that unless I am happy at 2fps. Browsing is okay but games will be a different matter for this old comp.

Im holding back buying the stuff for a new PC for two reasons though. One Im still not sure I will ever really use it because between the laptops and the TV I am not convinced it would get much use as I just cant get the urge to go gaming anymore. The second reason is that I have two copies of Windows 7 on order and theres not much point building it until I get those. Funny how as you get older the urge to go fragging diminishes or at least it did for me. Its a bit like sex I guess. As you get older a decent slap up meal often sounds more appealing. After all both tend to have the same result as you get older anyway. With both you more often than not just fall asleep afterwards lol.

22 in resolution should be 1650x1080. I tried a netbook recently, and once you get it setup, it's fine for docs and what not, but browsing the web sucks. It also is a pain in the ass if you are above average in size. I have to stick to some very specific models (w/ better keyboard size and layout) in order to use one comfortably. I much prefer my o'l reliable 15 in. More HP when I need it and very usable for everyday.

It will depend on the monitor DM. This ones native resolution is definetly 1920 x 1080. Apart from what it says on the tin I tried a couple of games yesterday that could not go to those resolutions and a message popped up on the screen saying you should adjust the setting to 1920 x 1080 for optimal performance. 1920 x 1080 is 1080i/p full HD standard and presumably the latest monitors are catering for HD.

Its quite a clever piece of kit actually especially as it was not that expensive. No matter what resolution you are playing at it automatically adjusts correctly so there is no mucking about with the settings for over/under scan etc. Browsing is rather strange though but you would get used to it. I have been doing a bit of web design for people recently and the large screen is great for working in multiple windows I have to say. Thats one of the reasons I bought it as my old 19 inch CRT was becoming a bit of a pain and this one allows you to view your work at all different types of resolutions. I never bought an LCD before now for this kind of stuff because colour representation was below par unless you spent fortunes but there has been a big improvement over the last year or two. It has certainly been a worthwhile upgrade.

Yea, once you get used to the fixed text resolutions, it's really hard to go back to the big heavy CRT's.
